Traditions Transformed
Give an old favorite a new twist -- take a traditional block and tweak it. Learn to draft and piece distorted traditional blocks. Also learn a simple paperless freeform curved machine piecing technique which allows students to build abstract texture in their quilts. The sample quilt is totally machine pieced, including the machine-inset sphere. Class time will be mostly spent on learning to distort blocks and learning the patternless freeform piecing technique. This is free-wheeling rotary cutting fun for those ready to try working more freely without patterns.

The workshop lasts for six hours.

Sewing machine and basic sewing kit
Cutting mat, rule and rotary cutter
Paper scissors
Ruler, pencil and eraser
Typing or computer paper - 3 sheets
Fine-tip sharpie and chalk pencil
Small envelope for pattern pieces
Lightbox if you have one - (students may share if necessary)
One or two irons and boards in classroom
Sufficient electrical cords for machines and lightboxes
Supply fee $5 (includes original pattern)
FABRIC - We will be exploring a new technique for many people. Bring at least three contrasting NON-PRECIOUS fabrics for practice work with the freeform cutting technique. During class time, we will mainly work with the freeform technique in the field and sky, and the pathway of distorted blocks. Choose your own color range or refer to the sample. Not all fabrics for pattern will be needed during class time.
